Good questions.
Everything people ask us before their first class, in one place. Can't find your answer? Call or WhatsApp 07578 284838.
01Getting started
I've never trained. Can I start?
Yes, and most of our members started exactly where you are. Start at a 6pm fundamentals class on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, beginners welcome, or Sunday 1pm (1 to 2:30pm), beginners welcome. They suit complete beginners: you'll warm up as a group, learn the technique of the day, and spar at the end at your own pace. Nobody is ever forced to do anything they don't want to, and you're welcome to watch a class first if you'd prefer.
Which class should I go to first?
If you've never trained, book any class labelled "Beginners" on the timetable. If you've earned at least one stripe on your white belt, or have about three months' experience, you can join Fundamentals and Mixed Levels classes. Coloured belts are welcome in Advanced classes. Not sure? Message us in the Gymdesk app and we'll point you to the right one.
What will my first class be like?
Someone from the team will greet you, run through our house rules and show you around. You'll get changed, loosen up on the mats, then the coach leads a group warm-up and teaches the technique of the day. There's a chance to spar at the end, at your own pace.
Is BJJ OK for women?
Absolutely. Women train in every class on the timetable, from Beginners to Advanced. We currently run a women's class on Sunday mornings; check the live timetable for the latest.
Will I get hurt?
You spar when you're ready, not before: in week one if you like, or watch and sit out if you're not. Tap, and it stops. Our coaches keep beginners' classes controlled and safe, and everyone looks after their training partners.
Am I too old?
Almost certainly not. Reiss started at 25 with no sports background, and both of his world titles came in the Masters divisions, for athletes over 30. You train at your own pace, rest whenever you need to and spar only when you're ready. [Placeholder: members who started in their 40s or later, with permission]
How old do I need to be?
Adult classes are for ages 14 and over. Kids train in their own classes: Cubs are 4–7 and Juniors are 8–12.
Is there parking?
There's no parking on Brixton Hill itself. You can park on some nearby side streets at certain times: check the local parking signs for controlled hours. Buses stop right outside, and Brixton station is about a 15-minute walk. How to find us.
I have a medical condition or injury. What should I do?
Tell us before you train by filling in the medical section of your student profile accurately, and let your coach know on the day. For everyone's safety we may ask for more information or a doctor's note, depending on the condition.
02What to wear
What should I wear?
Most of our classes are in the gi (the jiu-jitsu uniform). Wear a t-shirt or rash guard underneath, and bring a water bottle and a towel. Kids can come to their free class in comfy sportswear.
Do I need to buy a gi straight away?
No. We lend you a gi free for your first week. After that, a loaner gi is £10 each time you borrow one, or you can get your own.
Can I buy an NSBJJ gi?
Yes. Our premium NSBJJ gi is fitted in person at the gym, so you get the right size first time. You can add one when you sign up, or ask at the front desk. Merchandise isn't posted out: collect it at the gym.
03Prices & payments
How does the £20 trial month work?
You get a month of unlimited adult classes for £20. Book your £20 month here, then book classes in the Gymdesk app. After the month, your membership rolls on automatically through Gymdesk at £70 a month (2 classes a week). You can cancel any time.
How much is membership?
£70 a month for 2 classes a week, or £95 a month for unlimited classes. A single drop-in class is £15. See all prices on our pricing page.
Is there a joining fee?
No joining fee to start. If you cancel and later come back, there's a £75 re-joining fee. Freezing instead of cancelling avoids it.
Can I pay with Klarna or Clearpay?
Yes. Klarna and Clearpay are available at checkout when you buy one of our membership packages. Ask us which packages are currently available.
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, at varying prices depending on what you need. Call or WhatsApp us to arrange one.
04Kids
How does my child start?
With a free trial class. Cubs (4–7) train at 4:15pm and Juniors (8–12) at 5:00pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Book the free class online; no kit is needed, just comfy sportswear.
What does the Kids Intro Programme cost?
The Intro Programme is 4 months and includes a free gi. It's £100 for the first month, then £75 a month, or £300 if you pay for the 4 months in full. Afterwards, kids move up to our Advanced Kids programme at £75 a month.
Do brothers and sisters get a discount?
Yes: 20% off for each brother or sister.
What if my child leaves the programme early?
The Intro Programme is a 4-month commitment. If you're paying monthly and your child leaves early, at any point, there's a £150 charge. If you paid for the 4 months in full, there's no charge: you can simply leave (the remaining months aren't refunded).
05Booking
Do I need to book classes?
Yes. Book through the Gymdesk app or the online timetable. You can book several classes in advance.
What if a class is full?
Join the waiting list and you'll be told if a space opens up. If you've booked but can't make it, please cancel your booking so someone else can have the space.
Do I need a Gymdesk account?
Yes. Your Gymdesk account is how you book classes, hear about socials and gradings, buy drinks and kit, and message us about billing, cancellations and anything else.
06Your membership
Can I freeze my membership?
Yes, any time, for £25 a month. You keep your app and class history, access to the members' WhatsApp group, and can still come to socials and events. If you plan to come back, freezing avoids the £75 re-joining fee.
How do I cancel?
You can cancel any time, with no notice period and no fee. Just message us in Gymdesk, email Reiss@newschoolbjj.com, or tell us at the gym, and no further payments will be taken. You can keep training until the end of the period you've paid for. Full details are in our terms.
I think I've been charged by mistake.
Message us and we'll sort it out. Please allow up to 48 hours for a reply: we're a small team.
How do I make a complaint?
Message us through the Gymdesk app or website with your name, contact details, what happened and when, and anything that helps explain it. We aim to acknowledge complaints within 72 hours and send a full response within 7–10 working days.
